Can I bring my dog to Japan?

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

If you are planning to travel to Japan with your dog, there are a few things to consider. While Japan is known for its love of animals, the country does have strict rules and regulations when it comes to bringing pets into the country. It is important to understand the laws and regulations before you make the trip to ensure that your pet is allowed entry.

The first thing to consider is that Japan has very strict quarantine laws. All animals must be quarantined for at least 120 days upon arrival. This means that your pet must stay in an approved quarantine facility for the duration of the quarantine period. The quarantine period is required to ensure that no diseases or parasites are brought into the country.

It is also important to note that there are certain breeds of dogs that are not allowed to enter the country. These breeds include Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Tosa Inus. If you have one of these breeds, you will not be able to bring your dog to Japan.

In order to bring your pet to Japan, you must obtain an import permit from the Japanese government. You can apply for the permit online or in person. The application process can take up to two months, so it is important to plan ahead.

Once you have obtained the permit, you will need to provide proof of vaccinations and a health check from a licensed veterinarian. You will also need to provide proof that your pet is free of any contagious diseases.

Finally, you must make sure that your pet is microchipped and registered before you arrive in Japan. This is a requirement for all pets entering the country.

The Japanese government has a website with all the information you need to know about bringing a pet to the country. You can find information about the rules, laws, and regulations, as well as the application process for the import permit.

Overall, it is possible to bring your dog to Japan, but it is important to understand the rules and regulations before you make the trip. With the proper planning and paperwork, you can ensure that your pet is allowed entry into the country.
